In periodontics, the main periodontal diseases that affect a dentition are periodontitis and gingivitis.
Nowadays, with the advent of implantology, periodontics is also responsible for the prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases such as peri implantitis.
If periodontics is not treated in time it can cause tooth loss. A periodontal treatment consists of the correction of the hygiene technique for the control of bacterial plaque, until the elimination of factors that trigger periodontics (dental calculus or calculus and periodontal pockets).
Periodontics is manifested as gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gum without affecting the bone) or periodontitis, where the destruction of the supporting bone of the tooth occurs.
